What Exit Polls Are [...]

One thing that’s important to know is that exit polls are primarily conducted to learn how different demographic groups actually voted. The press needs content to fill the airwaves after the voting is done, and political organizations need to know who to p̶a̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ reach out to in the next election. And political organizations in particular want that information on a very granular level — like “Polynesian-Americans in rural North Dakota vs. Eritrean-Americans in downtown Poughkeepsie” granular — so they can adjust their strategy for the next election (or, you know, not).So the polls are designed first to get granular demographic information, and only as a secondary feature to predict the overall outcome of the election.
